Textiles, fabrics, other items lost at fire guts Gbagi market

Textiles, clothing materials and others items to the tune of millions of Naira were on Sunday lost when fire guts some shops at the Bola Ige International market, Gbagi, Ibadan.

The incident, it was gathered started around 1PM.

Although, many of the shop owners and larger part of the market were not opened for business on Sunday, the incident sent panic wave across the capital city as many of the traders and people living in the area were seen rushing to the scene of the incident.

While the fire rages, many traders were seen rushing to the market from the various directions to be sure their section was not affected.

The incident is raising a cause for concern as many of the victims and traders expressed worry about the frequent cases of fire incidents in various markets in the capital city.

Sources said the fire incident started from one of the shops before it spread to another shop but the swift intervention of the men of the State Fire Service helped to curtail it before it spread to other shops.

The cause of the fire would not be ascertain as at the time of this report.

Confirming the incident, the General Manager of the State Fire Services, Mr Akinremi Akinyinka said his men were called around 1PM but their quick intervention and effort stopped the fire from spreading beyond two shops.

He said, “We received calls from our officers at Gbagi station, DPO Gbagi station and many market leaders at around 1: 23 pm.

“Our men got their around 1;30pm. 2 shops are well alighted. The fire is under control and are men are still cooling down.”
