Farmers and herders in the Southwest states of have signed a peace pact towards sustainable agricultural development in the region.
The groups said the pact will also ensure that farmers-herders clash is stopped in the region.
The pact was the highpoint of the Southwest commodities farmers summit held in Ibadan.
The summit which brought together farmers and herders from across the six states of the Southwest region afforded the parties the opportunity to proffer solutions to challenges faced by both groups and the need for government to carry them along in providing supports, policy formulation and assistance.
The Southwest coordinator of Commodities Farmers Organization (SCFO), Prince Segun Dasaolu and President of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Othman Ngelzarma signed the peace pact on behalf of their members.
In his remark, the National Chairman of MACBAN, Othman Ngelzarma acknowledged that the event was an opportunity to chart a way forward on ensuring security of both famers and herders in the region.
He said farmers and herders in Southwest are now united as brothers and must collaborate effectively to identify and address any problematic elements within the pastoralist community in the region.
Participants at the Southwest commodities farmers organization summit, which include Iyaloja General, Mrs. Tinubu-Ojo called on the farmers to see to work as a team and ensure that they utilize research institutions to get better yields.
With the theme: sustainable food production in Southwest Nigeria: the way forward, the summit focuses on ensuring that the Southwest farmers return to the farm, and also to promote food security in the country.
