Oyo vows immediate compliance as soon as talk ends on new minimum wage

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has assured workers in the State that it will immediately begin the implementation as soon as talks are concluded on consequential adjustment of the minimum wage in the state.

 

He also noted that, the adjustment notwithstanding, the government will not fail on its promise to ensure prompt payment of salaries on or before the 25th of every month.

 

He gave the assurance at the Main bowl of the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan, venue of the 2024 Workers Day March Pass.

 

The event was attended by top government functionaries, labour leaders, traditional rulers, social cultural groups and all affiliates of the two arms of the labour wings.

 

Represented by his deputy, Bayo Lawal, Governor Makinde charged the workers to reciprocate the good gesture of the state government by being more dedicated and committed to work.

 

He commended the state labour force for ensuring conducive atmosphere devoid of incessant industrial actions which allows for peace and development of the state.

 

Makinde said “I assure you all that as soon as negotiation is concluded with the labour unions on the minimum wage, the State will not delay action on implementation of consequential adjustment of the minimum wage. The State Government will not fail on its promise to ensure prompt payment of salaries on or before the 25th of every month (GSM Day).

 

“I want to charge the workers to reciprocate the good gesture of the state government by being more dedicated and committed. Remember that to whom much is given much is expected. You should work tirelessly and vigorously for the pay you earn and the Almighty God shall reward you.

 

“Great Oyo State Workers, I wish to commend the State Labour force for ensuring conducive atmosphere devoid of incessant industrial actions which allows for peace and development of our dear State. I request your continual cooperation and understanding as partners in progress.

 

“Let us use this May Day to celebrate the workers in Oyo State. I want to assure you that working together; this Administration shall protect workers right and promote incentives for improved productivity for the overall prosperity of our workers and dear State. I wish you all happy May Day Celebration.”

 

Earlier in their separate remarks, Comrade Kayode Martins and Comrade Bosun Olabiyi, Chairman Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) respectively lauded the government for the various strides and efforts at making life better for the workers and the citizens as a whole.

 

They called on government at all levels to cushion the negative effect of fuel subsidy removal and fuel scarcity, adding that there must be a sustained fight against land grabbing in Oyo State.

 

The Chairman of the 2024 Oyo State Worker’s Day, Chief Dotun Sanusi called for collective effort of individuals and corporate bodies with the government for more socio-economic heights in the state.

 

Highpoint of the ceremony was presentation of prizes and award presentation to both formal and informal sectors of the state including, who participated in the March Pass.
