Oyo host maiden masquerade, music, food festival to showcase tourism potentials

Oyo State government will on Thursday showcase its colorful culture as it hosts the maiden Egungun (masquerade) festival.

 

The event which is scheduled for the Race Course, inside Adamasingba stadium, opposite Ibadan Recreation Club is to highlight the rich culture and tradition of the Egungun adherents in the state.

 

Speaking at a press briefing to herald the event, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatubosun said the event will showcase the diverse masquerades that hold significant cultural and spiritual symbolism in Yorubaland, particularly in Oyo state.

 

Expressing the readiness of the state government to host the inaugural festival, Olatunbosun noted that the event, designed to showcase the rich diverse cultural display peculiar to the state will also showcase a colorful extravaganza that highlights the rich traditions and culture of the people.

 

He noted that, the state renowned for its deep cultural roots, will have on display masquerades from all the geopolitical zones comprising the 33 local government areas who will treat guests to various forms of entertainment and display.

 

He added that guests will also be treated to meals made from rich local delicacies synonymous with masquerades’ favorite dishes.

 

The event, organized by the Oyo State Ministry of Culture and Tourism, is expected to attract participants, special guests, and spectators from across the state and beyond including witnessing the presence of Araba of Osogbo, Ifayemi Elebuibon as a guest lecturer at the event.

 

According to Dr Olatubosun, each masquerade performance will not only entertain but also educate attendees about the history, folklore, and spiritual significance associated with their cultural icons as would be displayed in their various costumes.

 

The Commissioner expressed excitement about the festival, and emphasized its importance in preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Yoruba people particularly Oyo state.

 

He added that local artisans and vendors will also have the opportunity to exhibit and sell traditional crafts and delicacies to further enrich the cultural experience for all attendees and participants.

 

The Commissioner equally disclosed that adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone attending the event adding that the organizing committee has collaborated closely with local authorities to manage crowd control and maintain orderliness during the festivities.

 

While noting that UNESCO has given its assurances to the state government that it would adopt the festival as global event recognized by the world body consequent upon its success, Dr Olatubosun said the Egungun festival is part of Oyo state’s broader efforts to boost tourism and cultural exchange geared towards encouraging both domestic and international visitors to explore the state’s unique cultural offerings.

 

He said, “The 2024 maiden Egungun (Masquerades) festival will serve as a platform to celebrate our rich traditions, cultural heritage, and promote unity among our communities, and showcase Oyo State as a cultural hub for global recognition.

 

“Visitors can expect to indulge in local cuisine, witness traditional drumming and music performances, and participate in various cultural activities throughout the festival.

 

“UNESCO has given its assurances that it would adopt the festival as global event recognized by the world body consequent upon its success after three editions.

 

“The Egungun festival is part of Oyo state’s broader efforts to boost tourism and cultural exchange geared towards encouraging both domestic and international visitors to explore the state’s unique cultural offerings.”
