New minimum wage: Oyo govt, organised labour sign agreement on payment, consequential adjustment

Oyo state government and labour leaders have reached an agreement on the payment modalities of the new minimum wage and it’s consequential adjustments for all cadre of workers in the State.

 

The agreement was reached and signed by members of the State Public Service Joint Negotiating Council (Negotiating Council) comprising of representatives of the government and the leaders of the Organized Labour on Tuesday, 17th December, 2024.

 

It was gathered that the agreement was reached after series of negotiation and collective bargaining between the two sides of the Negotiating Council.

 

According to the details of the agreement sighted by The Nation, the new minimum wage payable in the Public Service of Oyo State is N80,000.26 per month and the consequential adjustments is across all the levels and categories of workers in the State Civil / Public Service.

 

Additionally, it was agreed that the new minimum wage salary structure will be effective nominally from 1st July, 2024, and financially from 1st January, 2025.

 

It added that the new minimum wage based salary structure is applicable to all the Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government, local governments, parastatals and primary school teachers in the state.

 

State government officials in the Negotiating Council include: Professor Olanike Adeyemo (Secretary to State Government), Mrs Olubunmi Oni (Head of Service), Commissioners Abiodun Aikomo (Justice/Attorney General), Akinola Ojo (Finance), Olusegun Olayiwola (Establishment and Training) and Comrade Adebayo Titilola-Sodo (Special Adviser on Labour Matters to Governor Seyi Makinde).

 

On the Organised Labour side, the members include Comrade Kayode Martins (Oyo NLC Chair), Comrade Bosun Olabiyi (TUC Chair), Comrade Seun Olanipekun (Joint Negotiating Council), Comrade Kola Badmus, Comrade Adeogun Ayobami, Comrade Olumide Lawal and Comrade Olusegun Abatan.

 

The agreement reads in part “After series of negotiation and collective bargaining between the two sides of the Negotiating Council, it was agreed as follows:

 

“The new minimum wage payable in the Public Service of Oyo State shall be N80,000.26 per month as per the table attached;

 

“The consequential adjustments of the new minimum wage across all the levels and categories of workers in the state civil / public service as per the table attached;

 

“That the new minimum wage salary structure shall be effective nominally from 1st July, 2024, and financially from 1st January, 2025;

 

“That the new minimum wage based salary structure is applicable to all the Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government, local governments, parastatals and primary school teachers in Oyo State;

 

“This Agreement shall be re-visited in line with the National Minimum Wage Amendment Act, 2024;

 

“That the application of the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) Tax system in the State shall be in strict conformity with the extant Tax Laws;

 

“That all previously approved special and existing allowances should be maintained;

 

“That the Pension in Oyo State should be reviewed as appropriate;

 

“That all public servants should reciprocate the kind gesture of the government by being hard-working, honest, loyal and committed to their duties;

 

“That all Ministries and Extra-Ministerial Departments should, as a matter of duty, be more aggressive in their revenue generation drive, to significantly improve the internally generated revenue of the state government; and

 

“Towards this Agreement, the Negotiating Council noted the effort and commitment of the State Government in prioritizing the welfare of workers as well as the sacrifice and patriotism of the Organized Labour.”
