The Oyo State Government said it has concluded plans to transmit an Executive Bill to the State House of Assembly for legislative consideration and approval of renaming of The First Technical University, Ibadan, after the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

Corenews reports that the late former governor established the technical university during his tenure.

This is as the government also said it is sending another bill to the lawmakers to establish a Commission to regulate and coordinate the activities of state owned tertiary institutions in the state.

The decisions form part of resolves reached at the State Executive Council meeting which held at the Exco Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Agodi Secretariat, Ibadan.

Briefing the press shortly after the meeting, Aikomo said the Executive Bill, when approved by the state legislature, would give the school renaming a constitutional backing.

Speaking on the coordinating and regulatory education body, the Justice Commissioner said the state deemed it fit due to the need to harmonise activities of the eight tertiary institutions owned by the state.

He said the bill named the “Oyo State Tertiary Institutions Commission Bill 2024” will consequently give birth to the creation of Oyo State Tertiary Institution Commission.

Aikomo said “There is a new commission that the government is trying to put together. Oyo state government has about eight tertiary institutions.

“LAUTECH Ogbomoso will be changed from a technological University to a conventional university that will offer diverse course in other areas of endeavours.

“We saw the need to have a body to regulate and coordinate the activities of all the tertiary institutions owned by the state government. The bill was presented to the Executive and it was passed.

Speaking earlier at the briefing, his counterpart at the Ministry of Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade also said at the meeting, the Council applauded and commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his proactive manner he handled the explosion incident that rocked Old Bodija, Ibadan on January 16th.

He said “Council applauded Governor Makinde for the proactive manner he handled the explosion that rocked Ibadan on January 16th.

“He was applauded for the fact that everyone, from within and outside the country recognised and commended him for a good job, an indication that the state government is in full control of the state.”
