The Oyo State Police Command has resented insurance cheques totalling Thirty-Seven Million, Eight Hundred and Eighty-Nine Thousand, Eight Hundred and Fifty-Seven Naira, Eighty-Seven Kobo (₦37,889,857.87) to 48 families of police officers who died in the line of duty.
The cheque was presented to the deceased families on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, in recognition of the ultimate sacrifice made by their loved ones in the service of the nation.
Speaking while presenting the cheque to families of the deceased, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenge said the presentation underscores the unwavering commitment of the Inspector-General of Police to the welfare of police personnel and their families, as personnel welfare remains a key priority of his administration.
According to him, the initiative formed part of the broader welfare framework designed to ensure that serving, retired and deceased officers, as well as their families, receive the necessary support and protection from the Nigeria Police Force.
The Police boss, while conveying the goodwill and commitment of the Inspector-General of Police, noted that the intervention goes beyond the financial value of the cheques, particularly for families who have lost their loved ones in the line of duty.
He explained that although no financial compensation can replace the lives lost, the gesture is intended to provide a measure of financial respite and cushion the impact of the loss on the affected families.
The Police Commissioner urged the beneficiaries to make judicious and productive use of the funds, particularly in ways that will enhance the welfare, education and future aspirations of their families.
He stressed that the sacrifices made by their loved ones will remain an enduring part of the history and proud tradition of the Nigeria Police Force.
He reassured the beneficiaries that the loss of their loved ones does not sever their relationship with the Force, urging them to continue to see themselves as valued members of the larger Nigeria Police family.
He reaffirmed that, under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, the welfare of personnel and their families will continue to receive sustained attention.
He however reiterated commitment of the Police to implementing welfare initiatives of the Inspector-General of Police and ensuring that the sacrifices of officers who paid the ultimate price in the service of the nation are not forgotten, while supporting their families with dignity, compassion and a sense of belonging.
