Indication emerged on Thursday that the crisis rocking the Governor Seyi Makinde’s faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State may be far from getting over.
This is because a wave of resignation is rocking the party, a development that is seen as preparatory to mass defection from the party, particularly by political office seekers in the forthcoming 2027 elections.
As at the time of this report, some key political associates and loyalists of the governor are already announcing their resignation from the umbrella.
Although, virtually all those who have resigned so far attributed their decision to the unending series of crises which has rocked the party in the last few months, non of them announced the next party of choice.
The situation, it was gathered could have been part of the wider strategy by the governor and his loyalists to highten suspence on the next point of call to contest the next election.
Corenews.ng reports that aside the Makinde’s faction in the state, there is another faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr Nyesom Wike.
Although, there are indications that the faction is weighing between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), sources hinted that the governor and some leaders have been holding nocturnal meetings with the APM with the decision likely to go that direction.
As at the time of filling this report, at least no fewer than nine prominent chieftains and Makinde’s loyalist have dumped the umbrella party, without announcing their next port.
The role calls of those who have dumped the party as at Thursday include: a gubernatorial aspirant, Ambassador Olufemi Oguntoyinbo; and Chairman of Oluyole Local Government Area and former PRO of the stste PDP, Akeem Olatunji.
Others are the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Abiodun Fadeyi; member of the House of Representatives representing Ibarapa North/Ibarapa Central Federal Constituency, Anthony Adepoju; his counterpart representing Ibadan North East/Ibadan South East Federal Constituency, Abass Adigun; and the member representing Ibadan North West/Ibadan South West Federal Constituency, Adedeji Olajide, popularly called ‘Odidiomo’.
Speaking on his decision to dump the party, Fadeyi, who represents Ona Ara State Constituency in the House of Assembly, said he dumped the PDP due to the internal crisis rocking the party.
He said: “Yes, I am also leaving the party. I am defecting, of course. The reason is what others are giving. What are the reasons others are giving? It is due to the internal crisis.”
Olatunji, a former Publicity Secretary of the PDP in the state, in his own remark, also cited internal crisis as the reason for his defection.
He said: “Yes, it is true. Due to the internal crisis. You know Wike has bastardized the party. He did not allow the party to breathe. We need to give the people of our constituency the opportunity to enjoy good governance.”
A chieftain of the party confided in The Nation that more loyalists of the governor are on their way out of the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Meanwhile, a former Commissioner of Police in Lagos and Benue States, Fatai Owoseni (rtd) has resigned his position as the Special Adviser Security to Governor Makinde and the Executive Secretary, Oyo State Security Trust Fund.
The retired Police Commissioner, in a letter dated May 7, 2026, which was addressed to the governor, through the office of the Chief of Staff, said he was leaving the positions with immediate effect
He thanked the governor for the opportunity given to him to serve the people of the state.
The letter with the title: Letter of resignation. RE: CP Fatai Owoseni, (Rtd), reads: “I present my greetings and wish to humbly inform Your Excellency of my decision to resign my appointments as the Special Adviser on Security and the Executive Secretary of the Oyo State Security Trust Fund (OYSSTF).
“By virtue of the office, I represent the State at the Forum of National and Subnational Security Officials (FONSSO) in the office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), as well as on the Board of the Oyo State Security Network (OYSSN)- Amotekun, which may request a replacement.
“The list of OYSSTF bank accounts to which I am a signatory, along with their status, is attached hereto. I will be readily available to process changes in signatories for mandates of the different accounts when required. I am also available to provide insight or professional opinion on any issue related to my stewardship or other security matters.
“I seize this opportunity to express my immense gratitude to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Oyo State, for the opportunity to serve our state in my own modest capacity. May the Almighty God continue to bless you with good health and divine guidance to lead Oyo State to greater heights. Forward ever to our dear Oyo State.”
It was gathered that Owoseni’s resignation from Makinde’s government may not be unconnected with his decision to contest the governorship seat of the state in 2027, and that he would be announcing his new party platform in the next few days.
