A Lagos-based youth development nonprofit has launched a landmark advocacy campaign that places adolescent girls at the forefront of efforts to reform menstrual health policy in Nigeria’s private secondary schools.
Teens Smart Builders Initiative (TESMI), in  bold move, launched its most ambitious policy advocacy initiative, the #BleedWithDignity campaign, aimed at promoting menstrual dignity and educational equity for girls across Lagos State.
The groundbreaking campaign brings together grassroots youth mobilisation and institutional reform efforts, engaging government institutions, schools, and civil society organisations in a united ffront.
According to TESMI, the campaign represents a crucial step towards addressing the long-standing issue of period poverty and menstrual stigma in Nigeria. With an estimated 37 million girls and women lacking access to adequate menstrual health products and hygiene infrastructure, the need for such initiatives is dire.
TESMI’s efforts are part of a broader movement to prioritise menstrual health as a fundamental human right, recognising that every girl deserves to manage her period with dignity and confidence.

Through the #BleedWithDignity campaign, TESMI seeks to challenge harmful stereotypes and advocate for policy changes that support menstrual health.

The organisation is working with schools, health institutions, and communities to create supportive environments where girls can thrive without the burden of menstrual stigma. By engaging with government institutions, TESMI aims to drive policy reforms that will increase access to menstrual health products, improve hygiene infrastructure, and promote awareness campaigns that break the silence around menstruation.

The campaign’s focus on grassroots mobilisation has the potential to create a ripple effect, inspiring similar efforts across the country. As Nigeria strives to achieve gender equality and empower its girls, initiatives like #BleedWithDignity are crucial in driving change.

The organisation’s efforts have already garnered support from key stakeholders, including the Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, who emphasises that “no girl should have to choose between her education and her period”.

As TESMI continues to push the boundaries of menstrual advocacy, the #BleedWithDignity campaign serves as a beacon of hope for girls and women across Nigeria. By breaking the silence around menstruation and promoting menstrual dignity, TESMI is helping to create a more equitable society where every girl can reach her full potential.

The success of the campaign hinges on the collective efforts of stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organisations, and individuals. TESMI is calling on all Nigerians to join the #BleedWithDignity movement, to support policy reforms, and to challenge menstrual stigma in their communities. Together, we can create a Nigeria where menstrual health is a fundamental right, not a privilege.

As the campaign gains momentum, TESMI plans to expand its reach, engaging more communities and schools, and advocating for policy changes that will benefit girls and women across the country. The organisation’s commitment to menstrual advocacy is unwavering, and its impact is already being felt for by girls and women nationwide.

The #BleedWithDignity campaign is more than just a movement – it’s a revolution. A revolution that seeks to dismantle the barriers that prevent girls from reaching their full potential. A revolution that demands menstrual health be prioritised, and that every girl be given the chance to #BleedWithDignity.
