Academic and other activities were on Tuesday morning put on hold at the main campus of The Polytechnic Ibadan as the students took to the streets to protest against the renaming of The institution to Victor Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic Ibadan by Governor Seyi Makinde.
Corenews reports that, the governor, while speaking at the interdenominational service held in honor of Late Ex-Governor Omololu Olunloyo had announced the renaming of the institution after the former governor for his contribution to the growth of the education sector in the state and the country as a whole.
Olunloyo was the first Rector of the Institution as well the Commissioner in the old Western region.
However, the decision of the governor to name the institution after him has been trail with controversies.
While some sections of the public applauded the governor for his decision others vehemently opposed it.
Aside the students, the Alumni are also divided over the action of the government.
This development has reliably gathered led to the decision of the enraged students to paralyze the academic and other related activities on the campus.
It was gathered that, the South and North campus gates of the Institution were put under lock and key as at the time of this report.
The development has deprived the people access to the institution.
Commuters and motorists were subjected to untold hardship as they were forced to trek a long distance.
The enraged students have insisted that the situation would remain the same until the governor reverse his decision.
Also, the students staged a roadblock at Sango Junction, thereby obstructing vehicular movement
As at the time of this report, the students have stormed the Oyo State government Secretariat with placards and singing solidarity songs to expressed their displeasure.
The early morning students’ visitors also forced security operatives to shut the entrance gates of the state Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.
As at the time of this report, the protesting students stil lay siege at the Secretariat.
