Personal belongings of students were lost to a midnight fire in section of the Queen Elizabeth Hall, University of Ibadan on Thursday.
Although no life was lost, students scampered for safety as the fire razes around 1AM and 2AM, Thursday.
Confirming the incident, the General Manager, Oyo State Fire Service, Revd Akinyemi Akinyinka said, “The Agency received the distress call at exactly 01:43hrs from one Miss Ibikunle Hallen on Thursday 5th December, 2024.
“Immediately, fire personnel were deployed to the scene of incident and arrived in time.
“On getting to the place, it was discovered to be two (2) rooms at the upper floor at Elizabeth Hall were affected.
“Only two(2) rooms were affected at the upper floor and properties worth billion were saved.
“No casually was recorded. The Fire was completely extinguished together with UI Fire Service.”
Also buttressing the development, the Student Union President, Comrade Aweda Bolaji and Secretary, Comrade Ogundijo Japheth identify and commiserate with the affected students.
According to the duo in a statement jointly signed, as at 230AM, the fire was already off due to the swift response of the fire service department and other authorities involved.
They alao appreciated all students to from other halls who came out to help in the midnight saying their actions demonstrate the good character that the University instills in all it’s students.
“We are proud of this selflessness and willingness to assist fellow students in times of need. We also appreciate the University management for their swift response to incident, particularly the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Professor Peter Olapegba who was also there will very end.
“The union is confident that the cause of this fire outbreak will be investigated thoroughly so as to prevent its recurrence in the future. We are committed to ensuring the safety and well being of all students on campus”, the statement reads in part.
